AFMA proud to support emerging seafood industry leader
Yang Wu, one of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority’s (AFMA) Senior Fisheries Officers, has been successful in securing a place in the National Seafood Industry Leadership Program (NSILP).
The program is funded by the Australian Government through the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. It runs for six months and concludes in Canberra in September 2023.
The program is the only national industry specific leadership program for the seafood industry and has been informed and developed in consultation with, and feedback from, the industry. It focuses on developing practical skills that participants can apply at a personal, business, and national organisation industry level.
Skills, experience and relationships gained from the leadership program is particularly relevant to our people. Our fishery officers are responsible for delivering our National Compliance and Enforcement Program, this includes conducting investigations and reporting of suspected breaches of fisheries and other relevant Commonwealth legislation and advising our stakeholders of our fisheries compliance and enforcement activities. Participation in the leadership program will provide the opportunity to connect with industry decision-makers and develop industry networks.
Yang Wu, Senior Fisheries Officer, was extremely pleased to be selected for the program. “It was a very competitive selection process. I’m really proud to have been selected and to be able to represent AFMA.”
Yang applied for the program to build new skills, networks, and gain a whole-of-industry perspective that will benefit his long-term career as a Fisheries Officer.
“This program gives me an opportunity to work with the industry, not only as a fisheries officer, but as a mate and as a team member. I will get to know firsthand what is of concern to the seafood industry and get a chance to work together to make some changes,” said Wu.
“The seafood industry plays a vital role in developing a sustainable fishing industry. This program will further assist me in understanding and learning environments and behaviours to favour optimal outcomes.”
AFMA has encouraged all staff to consider applying for the leadership program.
“The support was there from the very beginning.
“From the initial email sent encouraging us to participate the program, to the preparation stage and application, then being accepted into the program. I’ve been supported all the way through, both from the organisation, and my colleagues from different teams.
“I highly admire the different training programs AFMA has put me through for my career development. Only 12 months in the agency and I have completed Sea Safety Training, Boarding at Sea Training, the Surveillance Course and Cert IV in Government Investigation.
“I genuinely believe each training program I’ve completed successfully is another asset I’ve acquired for my career development and those assets are essential for my day-to-day job.
“And the best thing I found about this process is there is always a wealth of knowledge, experience, and support I can fall back on from my team!”
