Patrol observes high compliance in the Torres Strait

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) would like to recognise industry’s commitment to support our efforts toward sustainable management of the Torres Strait Tropical Rock Lobster (Kaiar) Fishery and Torres Strait Prawn Fishery after a recent patrol observed a high level of compliance.

AFMA Senior Fisheries Officers conducted a seven-day patrol in partnership with the Queensland Police Service within the Torres Strait communities of Yam (Iama) Island, Sue (Warraber) Island, and Coconut (Poruma) Island.

Authorities carried out at-sea boardings, fish receiver audits, and inspections of fish receiver premises, as well as monitoring fishing gear, compliance with reporting requirements and accurate recording of catch.

Overall, authorities observed a high level of compliance. Suspected breaches were quickly addressed with those fishers on location and subsequent follow up occurred with licence holders to ensure no ongoing compliance issues.

Of note, the AFMA element of the patrol was conducted by two female Senior Fisheries Officers, both with extensive experience communicating and engaging with industry and stakeholders.

“The patrol was a great opportunity to meet local island communities involved in the fishing industry and to see the positive impact of the AFMA team in the Torres Strait as a whole,” said Sidonie Lowe, Senior Fisheries Officer.

Madelaine Crowden, Senior Fisheries Officer and Torres Strait resident noted how great it was to work alongside Sidonie and introduce her to the beauty of the Torres Strait.

“I loved working with someone who has such a passion for the marine environment and in-depth knowledge of how we regulate our fisheries,” said Madelaine.

AFMA proudly supports increased participation of women in the fishing industry to build a more diverse, skilled workforce, ready to tackle the emerging challenges facing the industry.
